Intelligent Reflecting Surface for MIMO VLC: Joint Design of Surface Configuration and Transceiver Signal Processing

With the capability of reconfiguring wireless electromagnetic environment, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) becomes a new paradigm for designing future communication systems. In this paper, we consider optical IRS improving performance visible light (VLC) under multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) setting, where mean square error (MSE) IRS-aided MIMO VLC is minimized by jointly transceiver signal processing. To end, channel gains are first derived point source assumption, based on which MSE minimization problem formulated subject to emission power constraints configuration constraints. Next, propose an alternating optimization algorithm, decomposes original into three subproblems, iteratively optimize configuration, precoding detection matrices minimizing MSE. Moreover, theoretical analysis proposed algorithm in high low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes investigated, revealing that joint process can be simplified such special cases, algorithm’s convergence property computational complexity also discussed. Finally, numerical results show schemes significantly reduce as compared their counterparts without IRS, outperforms other baseline schemes.
